Summary - Global Health Panel

Hosted by Howard Federoff, executive vice president of Georgetown University Medical Center, this panel brought together experts who are shaping how cancer treatment will look tomorrow and how these treatments can be deployed to help those in the developing world.

Dr. Federoff introduced Dr. Lou Weiner, Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University, and Dr. Richard Schlegel, Chair of GUMC’s department of pathology. They discussed cancer treatment and the evolution of preventing HPV through vaccination. They all insisted on the importance of prevention as the best actual treatment.

Systems medicine, a new approach to treatment, builds on increased knowledge about the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. This panel addressed the broad implications of systems medicine for individual patients and the potential for improving public health of entire populations via early prediction and prevention.
