Summary - International Law Panel

This panel, hosted by T. Alexander Aleinikoff, Executive Vice President for Law Center Affairs and Dean, Georgetown Law, brought together several international law experts:
John Delaney, Chairman and CEO, CapitalSource; Robert Ruyak, Managing Partner and CEO, Howrey, Simon, Arnold & White; Robert Kimmitt, Deputy Secretary U.S. Treasury; Lee Miller, Partner, Joint CEO, Member Executive Committee and Global Board, DLA Piper; and Milton C. Regan, Co-Director of the Center for the Study of the Legal Profession, as well as Aleinikoff himself. They discussed the impact of globalization on the legal profession, on the challenges to the relationships between global clients and law firms, and the anticipated impact on law schools preparing the next generation of international problem solvers.

Panelists discussed the different business models that global law firms are using to serve their multinational clients in established and emerging markets, and shared their perspectives on the evolving nature of transnational law.

In a new scene where law firms work with different cultures and not just one model, the mixture of cultures presents many different problems. They all agree that it’s very necessary to count on exceptionally good lawyers and that the challenge is to educate  these people across the global spectrum. Kimmitt concluded that the expertise component is what we they will be looking for.
