International Relations Panel: Interest Rates and National Interests – The impact of economic and political issues on European/U.S. Relations

This panel will address major economic, political and security issues likely to shape relations between Europe and the United States in the coming year.
Dean Robert Gallucci of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service will host the panel, which will also include the following dignitaries: John C. Kornblum, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany as well as senior counsel to Nörr Stiefenhofer Lutz and senior advisor to Accenture and Lazard GmbH in Germany; Robert Kimmitt, Deputy Secretary U.S. Treasury; and Charles Powell, Deputy Director of the Elcano Royal Institute for International and Strategic Studies, to discuss the evolution of Europe-U.S. relations, particularly relevant given the upcoming presidential elections in Spain and the United States.
Future generations must be prepared for a world in which change is a constant: new actors are altering the fundamental nature of power politics, globalization is strengthening some societies and rendering others more fragile; innovations in technology affect virtually every aspect of our lives. In addition, age-old issues such as war and peace, religious tolerance and ethnic conflict compete for our attention alongside newer threats including terrorism and ecological disasters. Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service helps students understand, interpret and respond to an increasingly complex world.

Panelists are sure to tackle numerous global challenges and advance society’s ability to understand them and, more importantly, find solutions to them.
