For nearly a quarter century, John J. DeGioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for education and research.

Since graduating from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty member. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown’s 48th president. As president, Dr. DeGioia is deeply committed to sustaining academic excellence at Georgetown.

He has helped to recruit intellectual leaders to the faculty and secured substantial funding for scholarly research and academic programs. He is a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO and Chair of its Education Committee and represents Georgetown at the World Economic Forum and on the Council on Foreign Relations.

As the first lay president of a Jesuit university, Dr. DeGioia places special emphasis on sustaining and strengthening Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit identity and its responsibility to serve as a voice and an instrument for justice. He has also been a strong advocate for inter-religious dialogue.
