The future of cancer treatment and prevention in the Global Health Panel

Georgetown University Medical Center is an internationally recognized academic medical center whose three-part mission of research, teaching and patient care is carried out with a strong emphasis on community outreach, public service, and a dedication to the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care of the whole person. This refers to the psychological, spiritual and social as well as physical well being of the person and a dedication to the care of others and the health needs of our society.

Dr. Howard Federoff, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at Georgetown University and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, will host the Global Health Panel: The Future of Global Cancer Treatment and Prevention. This panel will bring together experts who are defining the way cancer treatment will be in the future, and how these treatments can be deployed to help those in the developing world.

Systems medicine, a new approach to treatment, builds on increased knowledge about the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. This panel addresses the broad implications of systems medicine for individual patients and the potential for improving public health of entire populations via early prediction and prevention.

Dr. Lou Weiner, director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Richard Schlegel, chairman of the Department of Pathology at Georgetown University Medical Center, will participate on the Global Health Panel, which will take place at the Westin Palace at 5pm.
